I totally appreciate Harry Walton down-to-Earth realism approach to depicting the wild events in bizarre surroundings. It's only a pity that he did not write much, only a handful of stories... This story screams to be reprinted and re-discovered for some military sf anthology. review: 25-Dec-07 (read in 2007) ---------------------------------------------- Jo Walton "On The Wall" © Strange Horizons, Sep 2001 --new writer : 2002 Campbell Award W --short story : 2002 Locus Poll William Jon Watkins "Butcher's Thumb" © Shadows, ed. Whitehead "Scar-Tissue" © Amazing Stories, May 1946 ---------------------------------------------- George Whittington "Space-lane Of No-return" © Planet Stories, Sum 1946 --/ fourth place space sf story --/ wonder award --/ adventure award --/ rare find I have not heard of George Whittington before, and it is not a pen-name, although it easily could've been... of some cool space adventure master like Leinster - it is a hidden gem, though. A gritty tale of survival against space piracy, this one is as exciting as they come. Well, it could be better, but the story hits home run here and is very adequate for a reader, say, bored in a "Starbucks". Continuing the analogy, this rabid tale of the Asteroid Patrol will blast the reader out of the coffee-shop velvet chair into a vacuum-cold crazy space warfare, giving him little chance to finish his espresso. Woodbury "Aground in Space" © Astounding Stories, Aug 1934 --/ cool sf story --/ wonder award --/ idea award --/ rare find It's a pity this author only wrote two stories ever, according to ISFDB. The concept has promise, it's aptly executed, with good scientific romance and an adventure plot (although absolutely preposterous science, but it's even better this way). I am not going to spoil the mind-boggling central idea of the story for you - just think about how a reversal of the properties of space and matter (what is considered solid, and what is not) can affect space travel - with a wide-eyed galaxy-spanning trip that results from this (kind of reminds me of the ending in "The City and the Stars" by Clarke). Greatly entertaining story, a hidden gem. ---------------------------------------------- Gary Woolard "The Four" © New Dimensions # 11, 1980 --/ cool f story --/ rare find Virginia Woolf "Solid Objects" © The Athenaeum, Oct 1922 Cornell Woolrich "Jane Brown's Body" © All-American Fiction, Mar 1938 F&SF, Oct 1951 --/ third place sf novella --/ wonder award --/ adventure award --/ style award: best mob story --/ emotion award: best noir --/ shock value --/ rare find Richard Wormser "Pan Satyrus" (nv) © 1963, Avon Books Will Worthington "Plenitude" © F&SF, Oct 1959 Gary Wright "Something On The Stairs There Be" © F&SF, Oct 1991 John C.
